Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group Celebrates 20 Years in Business

Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group, a privately-owned mortgage lender headquartered in Virginia Beach, Va., recently celebrated two decades in business. The yearlong celebration kicked off at the Hilton Oceanfront where more than 1,000 employees and guests dressed to impress at the company’s 1920’s-themed gala. Attendees included employees from Atlantic Bay’s branches from Florida to Delaware and guests had the opportunity to see first-hand how the company has grown since its inception in 1997. Atlantic Bay CEO Brian Holland grew up in Suffolk, Va. and graduated from Old Dominion University in 1993. Throughout college, Holland worked at a local Red Lobster where a manager at the restaurant encouraged him to go into the mortgage business. Brian soon joined a mortgage company and in just three months became the assistant branch manager. Three years later, he opened Atlantic Bay’s doors. What started as a company of four employees, has grown into a company of nearly 1,000 with more than 120 office locations across nine states.

“It’s very humbling remembering the little space we started in on Virginia Beach Boulevard, where I was writing the checks and emptying the trash cans,” says Holland.

“We had a little team and it’s amazing to see how we’ve grown – it’s all about our people.” By staying true to ethical lending practices and building a solid reputation of trust within the community, Atlantic Bay was able to survive the mortgage crisis of 2008. Atlantic Bay has continued to thrive over the last 20 years due to consistent leadership and branding, and the genuine care of their customers and employees. The company offers employees flexible hours, sales trips, paid time off, employee appreciation months and an open-door policy with management. “The environment we have been able to build for our team has been amazing,” Holland says. “To give our employees the ability to come in, work hard, accomplish a lot and still have a personal life is somewhat unusual in the mortgage business. It is so important to us that everyone can have a work life balance and enjoy time with their families.” Atlantic Bay’s commitment to its employees spans many generations. Betty Yungk has been working at the company since 1998, where she started as a receptionist. Throughout her time at Atlantic Bay, Betty climbed the ladder and now serves as the operations manager for the Charlotte, North Carolina branch. “The journey has been awesome,” Yungk says. “Each position at Atlantic Bay has shaped me and given me the experience that helps me provide the best customer service possible to our mortgage bankers and clients.” Both of Betty’s daughters also work at Atlantic Bay as manager of the compliance department and a closer; her sister also works for the company. “Being a part of the growth of this company has been phenomenal to watch. To watch other people grow, and to be a part of that, is very satisfying professionally and personally.” The company has served more than 100,000 homeowners over 20 years and is dedicated to providing customers with an exceptional home buying experience. “Atlantic Bay was with me every step of the way and has excellent customer service,” said homebuyer Leslie Tate.

“My mortgage banker took me as an individual and took my circumstances and helped me get where I needed to be to buy a home.”
