Helping clients when they really don’t think they can become a home buyer is very rewarding, especially at closing.
George Scott has a total of 25 years in the banking/mortgage industry. Seventeen of those years have been with Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group, where he has helped hundreds of borrowers purchase homes. Fifty percent of George’s clients are first time homebuyers.
Atlantic Bay clients like George for his easy going manner, a characteristic that provides a calming and reassuring frame of mind for borrowers as closing time nears. First time home buyers make up half of his business. He says, “I like working with first time home buyers and educating them on the home buying process, telling them what to expect and dispelling the myths of becoming a home owner. A lot of people say it is difficult to get a mortgage loan these days. It isn’t difficult, it’s tedious. It’s not always going to be about the lowest rate and the lowest price.”
George often counsels clients on credit issues to help them improve their rating. He advises clients that poor credit ratings develop over time and can’t be fixed overnight. If people have a game plan and stick to it, they can improve their credit rating and position themselves to eventually buy a home. A Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) trainer, George says, “Helping clients when they really don’t think they can become a home buyer is very rewarding, especially at closing. Their faces light up when they realize they’ve bought a home and provided a safe place for their family. To see their expressions is very gratifying for me.”
George is on the board of the Hampton Roads Housing Consortium and is chair of the membership committee. In addition, he has been active in the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+Men, an organization that educates, mentors and spotlights young African-American males across Hampton Roads and the Peninsula. The organization sponsors an annual Scholar’s Breakfast honoring all African-American men graduating with a GPA of 3.0 or higher average, where they announce Virginia state college scholarships. He says, “It’s very impressive to see the recipients walk across the stage to receive their awards.”
