From a visionary government official of yesterday to the trailblazing minds of today, discover just a few of the influential figures who have left an indelible mark on the march toward equitable and empowered Black homeownership. One thing is true of all these groundbreakers: they honored their past, seized the present, and elevated our future.

PastRobert C. Weaver

Promoted affordable housing programs, such as the Metropolitan Development Act of 1966, and championed passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act.

PresentMarcia L. Fudge

Secretary of Urban Housing and Development (HUD) since 2021. Marcia oversaw creation of Property Appraisal and Valuation Equity (PAVE), created to root out racial and ethnic bias in home valuations.

FutureBlack Millennials

Black millennials made up the largest generational share of mortgage loans among African Americans in 2022.* And the Black Homeownership Collaborative made strides in their goal to increase the number of Black homeowners by three million by 2030.

South Carolina (55%), Delaware (54%), and Mississippi (54%) were the states with the highest homeownership rates for Black Americans in 2021. according to NAR. In contrast, North Dakota (15%), South Dakota (25%), and Alaska (27%) had the lowest homeownership rates.

NAR's report found, "the homeownership rate for Black Americans varied from 15% to 55% across the country. Among 51 states, including the District of Columbia, 16 states had a homeownership rate for Black Americans higher than 44.0% - the national rate -in 2021."
