Buying your own home is exciting, but by the time you close your loan and move your things, settling into that unfamiliar new space may suddenly seem like an uphill climb. Here are seven ways you can start to feel at home in your new home!

Create One Calm Room

Maybe it’s the bedroom, living room, or study, but devote one space in your home to decluttered comfort. Make your bed and add plants to your windowsill. Light some candles and play your favorite music. Set up a yoga space or reading nook. Instead of waiting until after you’ve completely moved in, you’ve created a calm place you can enjoy immediately without reminders of your chores in front of you.

House plants like succulents, pothos, and Chinese evergreen are easy to maintain and bring instant life and color to any space.

Put Books on Their Shelves

Books are heavy and take up space, so getting them on the shelves is an easy way to clear some room quickly and add a little order. They also evoke pleasant feelings—they smell good, add color to the room, and remind you of the stories you enjoyed during childhood or past vacations.

Go Ahead and Organize

Instead of haphazardly tossing items into closets and drawers, stop and think about how you want your new home to be organized. Invest some extra time in folding, stacking, and hanging. Your belongings will be easier to find, and you’ll be happy later when you easily locate that favorite sweater because you’ve given early attention to closets, drawers, and the garage.

Host a Simple Dinner

Why wait until your home is perfect to have guests over? They won’t mind a few boxes on the floor, and you don’t need to dress up. Cooking in your new kitchen is a great way to feel at home—or just order some takeout and ask your friends and, even better, new neighbors, to pop by. Who knows, maybe they’ll even stay and help unpack!

Set Up Your Devices

Hopefully you have your internet and electricity up and running by the time you move in. And even if you do, it’s easy to put off untangling wires and positioning heavy TVs and computer equipment. But the sooner you do, the sooner you can enjoy movies and gaming after a long day of unpacking. Want to know more about how technology can make your home safer and more efficient? We've got tips!

Hang Fun Photos

Surrounding yourself with memories of friends and family will instantly bring familiarity to your new pad. Not ready to hammer holes into your fresh walls? Try removable picture-hanging hooks or strips, and if you’re not happy with the placement of your photos, you can always move them.

Do a Deep Clean

Moving is messy. Even newly- built homes can be covered in grit and grime from the construction process. But this is a chance like no other to really clean every nook and cranny of your new place before furniture and other items are in the way. Plus, it’s a fresh start to your latest accomplishment—a new home!
